Negative and Positive of Infrared Photograph

Click: on photo to enlarge: para amplificar

This infrared photograph appears in the very first pages of vol. III of the "Enciclopedia Guadalupana" edited by Fr. Xavier Escalada S.J.; the negative and positive of the same have been joined to save space and present them in greater detail on this blog.

Taken by Mr. Jesús Cataño W. in 1946 --a photographer employed by the Basilica de Guadalupe-- it's the only photo taken professionally using all the necessary implements to achieve results comparable to any of the trade as normally required by museums world wide.

It is also the only infrared photograph of St. Juan Diego's tilma (more properly an ayate, as the fabric is made of rough natural fibers) ever taken without the protective transparent cover.

The foldings of Her dress and other details can be seen with greater clarity than is achievable with conventional photography. It is for this reason that museums world wide use this technique to detect the legitimacy of every detail in all works of art.

No brush strokes can be discerned, there is no under drawing, sizing, or over-varnish, and the weave of the rough natural fibers is itself utilized to give portrait depth, no explanation of the portrait is possible by infrared techniques or by any other known means. It's as unique from a scientific standpoint as the Holy Shroud of Turin. Both inexplicable images are the only ones to be classified as aceiropoivhtoV, in the classical Greek meaning for supernatural (literally 'painted without use of hands').

A picture can be worth more than a thousand words, its meaning is clear for all to see.
